Hey Black Girl! was founded by Tanaka Chitanda, Martina Mbadinga, and Angela Ouma. All of whom are young black women who were seeking a space where they could share their personal experiences with other black women and gain insight and understanding from women who had already progressed in directions that they hoped to move in as well. As young black women, who migrated to Canada to pursue further education, they understood the isolation that can come from feeling out-of-place because of lack of representation. They saw this as a problem that they could offer a solution to, hence Hey Black Girl! was created.
Hey Black Girl! creates spaces where women can be comfortable in discussing their blackness, their womanhood and their professional ambitions. Hey Black Girl! is a safe space for young black women to discuss the issues that they face whilst being provided with opportunities for personal growth.
